What Is Xanthelasma?
Xanthelasma (or xanthelasma palpebrarum) are soft, yellowish deposits of cholesterol that form under the skin, most often on the upper and lower eyelids near the inner corner of the eye. They’re harmless and painless, but they tend to grow slowly over time and won’t disappear with creams or home remedies.
Xanthelasma is sometimes linked to high cholesterol or lipid levels, so it’s worth having a check-up with your doctor. The patches themselves, though, are a cosmetic concern, and that’s what we can address.
Xanthelasma and Cholesterol: What the Deposits Can Signal
Xanthelasma is a deposit of cholesterol under the skin of the eyelid. Removing it is a cosmetic procedure, and it treats the appearance, not the cause.
In a good number of people the deposits are associated with raised blood lipids, which is why it is worth having your cholesterol checked by your family doctor if you have not recently. That blood work belongs with a physician, not with us.
